cheap canada goose sale How Leicester looked in the Swinging Sixties in colourTime travel back to the 1960s with this rare colour photo11:06, 17 AUG 2017Updated11:41, 17 AUG 2017When I first saw this aerial photo of Leicester, I thought it must have been taken relatively recently, because most similar photos in the Mercury archive are in black and white. However, the rows of red buses, bottom, caught my eye and made me realise it’s actually a relatively early colour aerial photo and, it’s one of those amazing photos that has so much detail, it’s difficult to know where to begin! We are looking down on a section of the city centre showing Burley’s Way in the centre of the picture, St Margaret’s bus station to the lower centre, St Margaret’s Church to the centre left and Abbey Park to the top.In some ways, it’s an area that doesn’t seem to have changed that much since this undated picture was taken, presumably in the very late 1960s, but on closer inspection, there are quite a few differences.I suppose one of the most striking differences between then and now is the absence of the flyover that now dominates the eastern end of Burley’s Way.Another is that most cheap canada goose of the large industrial premises we see in this picture were still up and running and in good order. How sad it is to see this area today, with the old Kempton’s factory, on the extreme right, the Corah complex in the centre, and also the Abbey Motor Hotel above the multi storey car park, in the lower right, all in a poor state of repair and in the latter case, virtually derelict. This was once one of the showpieces of the city centre with its stylish d and popular Trencherman carvery restaurant. The vast Corah complex is seen here with the original factory, in lighter brickwork, behind the later additions.Sadly, much of this has been the subject of repeated arson attacks, which is a travesty, as Corah’s is a very important part of Leicester’s industrial history, as at one time it was the biggest hosiery factory in England, its origins dating back to 1815.Even the later building, with its handsome frontage that flanks Burley’s Way, is a shadow of what it was and looks unloved and uncared for, which is such a contrast to the days when it was owned by Corah. The same could be said of Kempton’s, whose stylish building and the green space in front of it were always immaculate. Not now, I’m afraid.Thames Tower, to the right of Corah’s, must have been quite new when this photograph was taken and I must say, looks better. The roundabout has been replaced by traffic lights and St Margaret’s bus station has been transformed from its concrete shelters and central caf complex seen here, but it’s nice to see the old Midland Red buses lined up at their various pick up points. The triangle of land in front of St Margaret’s Church, which was a car park, is now a garden area. The office block next door is still with us, as is the Royce Institute, which is directly behind it. The old Pineapple pub can be seen on the corner of Grafton Street, which leads to Royce Institute and the far end of the churchyard cheap canada goose sale.
